How mould cost behaves
A mould is a fixed cost. It does not care whether you order ten units or four hundred — it costs what it costs, once, and then every unit through it carries a share. That single fact drives the whole decision.
So the question is never "is a custom mould expensive". It is "how many units am I dividing it by". At ten units the mould dominates the price. At two hundred it is a rounding error and you are simply buying concrete.
The break-even, roughly
These bands are the shape of the answer rather than a quotation — the real figure depends on the unit, the mould material and how much reinforcement detail is involved. But the pattern holds on almost every job.
Timber, GRP or steel
Mould material is chosen against quantity and finish, and it changes the fixed cost substantially.
If the units are architectural and will be seen, the mould material matters more than the mould price — a tired timber mould shows on every face.
When adapting a standard unit is the right answer
Cutting, coring and adapting standard units on site genuinely wins on small quantities, on hidden work, and where the change is subtractive — an extra opening, a shortened length, a knockout in a different place.
It stops winning when the change is additive or structural, when the cut face will be visible, or when adapting compromises the reinforcement. A cut that severs bars in a buried unit trades a small saving for a durability problem you will not see until it matters. And site labour on forty units costs more than most people estimate before they have watched it happen.

How much does a custom precast mould cost?
It is a fixed cost divided by your quantity, so the per-unit figure depends entirely on how many you order. Under about fifteen units the mould usually dominates the price and adapting a standard unit wins; over forty it is normally the cheaper route.
Is it cheaper to cut standard units on site?
On small quantities, hidden work and subtractive changes, often yes. It stops being cheaper when the cut face is visible, when the change is structural, or when cutting severs reinforcement in a buried unit.
